Time
In our eyes, time flows in a linear structure. Yesterday, which has already passed, will not come back, and we cannot see tomorrow, which is soon to come. Time flows equally for everyone, and no one can resist the time they belong to.
Space
There is a space called "Daeheung-dong" (in Korean). This place has long functioned as the center of Cheonan city. However, the first time I encountered Daeheung-dong, it seemed like an island in the vast sea with no lighthouse, too far from the busy surroundings. The past is too calm here that it is unimaginable. It is said that it will be redeveloped and disappear soon.
Story
I was curious about the stories hidden in Daeheung-dong. I started to collect old photos and meet the people of Daeheung-dong. "There used to be a tax office, a city hall, and a wedding hall, so there were many guests. Someone even offered 100 million won to buy this place, but we didn't sell it. I don't know how many years ago that was.” "Oh, I remember! Song-chi market was there, and there was Daeheung Industries across the street. Cart pushers used to sell wood over there." It was a word from a grandmother who has been running her business for decades in one place. It was amazing. To me, these photos were just old data, but to someone else, they were memories of a space that remained in their minds!
1-1. Time
I didn't feel the heyday of Daeheung-dong, and I don't remember the rise and fall. I can’t feel it at all. But does that mean that time has no influence on me? I cannot agree with that. Through these few photos, I traveled back to the past with people and their stories. Beyond the stories and personal anecdotes in the photos, I returned to the present.
2-1. Space
Many times were piled up in Daeheung-dong, which was not visible at first. From the tax office that became a stationery store, Onyang-Nadri, where it is no longer accessible, to the coffee shop that has tightly closed its iron door. Even if it will disappear as a space now, how can someone remember this place without its form? Is it possible that the memories that fill this space will also disappear?
3-1. Story
My hometown from childhood also lost its form and became a completely different space amidst the waves of redevelopment. When I go there to find the faint scent of nostalgia, I recall my memories while feeling the remaining scenery. Wasn't it the same sense of belonging that I felt in Daeheung-dong? The regret of disappearing, the expression of attachment, someone's memory...
